SUMMER MEDICAL ACADEMY
Summer Medical Academy registration for summer 2024 will be open January 16, 2024 - March 8, 2024.
The B.E.S.T. Summer Medical Academy affords students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a variety of medical related fields (non-research related) such as learning simple medical procedures, watching surgeries, shadowing health professionals, volunteering in hospitals, interacting with patients, and more.
The program's primary goal is to encourage students from diverse backgrounds to focus on careers in the medical professions and provide them a curriculum that allows them to fulfill their dreams.

Curriculum at GlanceONLINE ANATOMY COURSE/ PHYSIOLOGY COURSE Online Student/Teacher Interactive Lectures done by BEST Staff and USF Medical Students. You will explore body systems, medical diagnosis of illness and diseases, and virtually observe interactive surgeries, lectures, seminars, workshops and demonstrations by health care professionals. The BEST Academy Source Book will provide anatomy source content, study skill strategies to include memory, retention and appropriate note taking strategies. FUTURE DOCTOR’S MEDICAL KIT Explore the body systems and gain information by using real instruments that doctors use every day to diagnose and treat medical conditions. In addition, students will use the kit’s instruments to go on an immersive journey through different medical fields like neurology, cardiology, surgery, emergency medicine, as well as many others. Also, students will continue to practice these skills through the Apprentice Doctor online course. You will get 75 hours of accredited course credit hours added to your resume. ONLINE VIRTUAL & ONSITE HOSPITAL LABS Enjoy a dynamic, engaging compilation of hospital departments, medical professionals and learn the traits needed for health careers, typical places of employment, requirements to enter the career, including high school preparation, special education, and details on obtaining a license or certification. Career talks and medical lab demonstrations with medical professionals and graduate students will help you decide the ‘right’ professional career for you. Lunch and Learn occasions allow you to join your peers to listen to career talks with medical professionals and graduate students which will help you explore various health professions. LEARNING HOW TO LEARN Due to the academic rigor of the medical courses, the academy will explore with you the BEST Study strategies using maximal effort (ME), learning concepts of note taking, study skills, retention, memory, listening, comprehension, and test taking. EMOTIONAL I.Q. Enhance your understanding of people and their social, emotional, health, and physical needs. It would give participants the understanding of "walking in someone else's shoes.” It would help participants to develop empathetic understanding and deep awareness of social determinants of health, cultural experiences, feelings, medical situations, and family. Students would be provided with real-world event scenarios, conflict resolutions interactive lectures, discussions focusing on caring, integrity, critical thinking, problems solving, self-control, sharing, kindness and positive attitudes. COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS An anatomy system assessment Review of interactive course notes Research project with an oral presentation Comprehensive course review Final course assessment completed and submitted Parent opinionnaire completed and submitted Attendance is mandatory

10th Grade Selection CriteriaIn order to be selected to participate in the Summer Medical Academy, applicant must meet the appropriate grade level requirements. Must have completed Biology 1, English 1, Algebra 1 Enrolled in English 2 Enrolled in Geometry or Algebra 2 Enrolled in Chemistry or Physics or Anatomy and Physiology Enrolled in a foreign language course Enrolled in at least 2 social science courses Must have an unweighted GPA of 3.0 First semester report card as well as 9th grade transcript must be uploaded with application Must be willing to be interviewed if your application has been chosen Upon interview day, students will sign a document that states that you are passing your courses and will upload current 3rd quarter report card Must provide two letters of recommendation, uploaded with application Must complete an application online

Completed 3 social science courses and enrolled in at least 1 social science course Must have an unweighted GPA of 3.0 First semester report card as well as 9th, 10th, and 11th grade transcripts must be uploaded with application Must be willing to be interviewed if your application has been chosen Upon interview day, students will sign a document that states that you are passing your courses and will upload current 3rd quarter report card Must provide two letters of recommendation, uploaded with application Must complete an application online
